52 EXHIBIT 3 -- ETFs LISTED ON ASX Source: ASX Listed Managed Investment Monthly Update, various editions Financial advisers and ETFs According to Investment Trends, and as outlined in Exhibit 1, financial advisers are increasingly including ETFs in their advice model. Specifically, more than one out of every four financial advisers currently includes ETFs in their advice model. Potentially, this will increase to more than one out of every two advisers by the end of 2011, if reported usage intentions for the next 12 months are realised in full. Is the fuss worth it? The first 'classical' ETF was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange on 9 March 1990. Just over 21 years later, the category has grown to nearly 2,700 ETFs, with assets of nearly $US1.5 trillion, trading on nearly 48 exchanges around the globe. While this is sizeable, ETFs continue to represent a relatively small part of the overall pool of funds under management around the globe, which, according to the Bank for International Settlements, amounted to circa $US23 trillion at the end of 2010. As at the end of March 2011, the market capitalisation of ETFs available through the ASX was approximately $A4.7 billion, against a total pool of managed funds as measured by the Australian Bureau of Statistics of circa $A1.8 trillion. Despite the significant growth achieved locally by ETFs during the past few years (Exhibit 3) and the expectation that the growth trajectory will continue, ETFs remain a niche product and are likely to stay that way in the foreseeable future. Macquarie Adviser Services offers a range of solutions that are suitable for advisers looking to include ETFs in their advice model.
